It's true what you hear: you don't realize your problem(s) with communication until you're in a place where you really need them. Like a courtship.
She thinks she's just voicing a differing opinion, he thinks she's trying to lead. He thinks he's lovingly addressing an issue, she hears him condemning her. See, communication's not just about saying the right things at the right time in the right way; it's more about acting as if the other person isn't. Assuming the best of the other person - that they don't mean what it sounds to you like they do.
Good communication doesn't assume improper motives.
Communication's about love - being patient and kind, not being arrogant or rude, joyfully searching out truth, always trusting, always hoping, always persevering... and the more I use my weak communication muscles, the more I realize how truly weak they are.
May God's grace and mercy rest upon me as I work to take captive my weaknesses, for His name's sake.
